C.A.R.E. was founded in 2000 by Dr. Hal Ott, a local veterinarian and a group of concerned citizens in the South Shore area who were concerned about the number of healthy animals euthanized each year in Hillsborough County. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2001, C.A.R.E. purchased a 3-acre property in Ruskin and opened the shelter. In 2003, C.A.R.E. opened a discount spay-neuter clinic serving the animals of low income residents in our area and the shelter has been expanding and improving our physical facilities ever since.

Our Board of Directors has ambitious plans for the future, as the southern part of our County continues to grow and the homeless animal population mirrors that population growth. We plan to expand our efforts in the spaying-neutering of dogs and cats and are finishing a new cat facility for our temporary feline residents at the shelter. We also plan to work more closely with local animal rescue groups in a collaborative effort to increase animal adoptions and decrease the cycle of unwanted animal births.

C.A.R.E. receives no government funding and we rely on the generosity of the community for our resources, both financial and volunteer. We like to think that the care we give our temporary canine and feline guests is second to none. We welcome visitors to our facility, encourage them to visit with our human and animal friends and share their opinions with us. Who knows, you just may decide to join us as a volunteer and/or become a member -- helping us to save homeless animal lives along the way!
